iPAQ keys for SavaJe OS

This document describes current key (button) functions for SavaJe OS on the Compaq iPAQ. It also describes the use of the virtual screen feature and the soft keyboard and the hard keyboard (Targus Stowaway).

NOTE:

It is not currently possible to customize the mapping of buttons for different applications. Specific button functionality is subject to change.

The Compaq iPAQ has the following logical buttons or keys:

To provide more functionality, each key has two functions, differentiated by a short or a long press. (A long press is about half a second or more.) There is also added functionality provided by key combinations.

Short presses

Key Function
POWER Suspend/resume device.
RECORD Put current application on the bottom (in the background) and bring the next application to the foreground.
DPAD Send the cursor up, down, right, or left.
SELECT Send the "space" key.
AP1 Sends PageDown by default.
AP2 Sends PageUp by default.
AP3 Sends Tab by default.
AP4 Toggle application launcher.

Long presses

Key Function
POWER Enable/disable backlight.
RECORD Rotate the screen 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
DPAD Auto-repeat the cursor keys.
SELECT Pan the virtual screen. If you have application windows that are larger than the physical screen, press SELECT then rock the DPAD in the direction you want to move. This will have no effect if all applications are contained within the physical screen.
AP1 Go to PIM (see pim(apps) ).
AP2 Go to Music (see music(apps) ).
AP3 Go to Tasks (see tasks(tools) ).
AP4 Toggle soft keyboard.

Key combinations

Keys Function
POWER (hold) + AP1 Launch a shell (see lsh(shell) ).
POWER (hold) + AP2 Launch a console window (see console(tools) ).
POWER (hold) + AP4 Toggle the frame (title bar) on full-screen applications.

Virtual screen

For applications that create display windows larger than the physical screen, the virtual screen feature can be useful. By default, such applications start up in maximized mode. To use the original window size, follow these steps:

You can navigate around the virtual screen by holding down the center of the SELECT button (cursor pad) and rocking the DPAD in the direction you want to move. Alternatively, you can hold down the SELECT button and drag on the screen.

Soft keyboard

The soft keyboard enables you to enter text by using the touch screen. The keyboard is a standard QWERTY keyboard. The following list describes some of the non-obvious features:

Shift key
Touch the shift key once to type a single uppercase character. Touch it twice to lock the shift key. A subsequent touch of the locked shift key will unlock it.

Moving the keyboard
Drag the diamond-shaped handles on the lower-left or lower-right corners of the keyboard to move it around the screen.

Hard keyboard

SavaJe OS supports the Targus Stowaway keyboard. To make an iPAQ running SavaJe OS see the Stowaway keyboard, connect the keyboard to the serial port of the iPAQ, then suspend/resume by pressing the POWER button at upper right (once to suspend, then once again to resume). The keyboard should be detected and be usable for input.

Mouse actions

Touching the screen briefly with a stylus (or your fingernail) is equivalent to a click of the left mouse button. Touching the screen and holding is equivalent to a click of the right mouse button.
